CSM vs CSPO: which certification should I get?
Choose CSM if you manage Scrum teams, CSPO if you own the product. Both require 20 SEUs every two years. CSM starts at $349.

It depends on your role. If you're managing a Scrum team, get CSM (Certified ScrumMaster). If you're owning the product, get CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner). Both are legitimate paths. Pick the one that matches where you spend your time.
What each certification covers
CSM teaches you to facilitate Scrum events, coach teams through impediments, and protect the team from scope creep. You'll learn the Scrum framework, servant leadership, and how to run a sprint without breaking it.
CSPO focuses on product strategy, backlog management, and stakeholder communication. You'll learn how to maximize product value, prioritize ruthlessly, and say no to the right things.
Both require 20 SEUs (Scrum Education Units) every two years to renew, plus a renewal fee to the Scrum Alliance.
The real difference: where you sit in the room
A Scrum Master's job is to protect the team's process. You're coaching, removing blockers, and making sure ceremonies don't turn into status meetings. You're not making product decisions.
A Product Owner's job is to make product decisions. You're talking to customers, prioritizing the backlog, and accepting or rejecting work. You're not running the team's process.
They're different enough that most people don't do both well at the same time. We've trained over 55,000 practitioners since 2001, and the ones who try to be both usually end up being neither.
Cost and time commitment
CSM classes start at $349 and run two days. You get exam access, course materials, and two years of Scrum Alliance membership included. CSPO pricing is similar.
After certification, you'll need to earn 20 SEUs every two years. That's roughly one training course or a few workshops. Most people do this without breaking a sweat.
Which one to pick
Ask yourself: Do I spend more time fixing how the team works, or deciding what the team builds?
If it's the first, CSM. If it's the second, CSPO. If you're genuinely split, start with CSM. Scrum Masters tend to have more career flexibility because every team needs process help. Product Owners are more specialized.
