The PMP certification exam consists of 180 questions you must complete in 230 minutes (3 hours and 50 minutes). It tests your knowledge of project management principles outlined in the PMBOK Guide, covering project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing.
Exam Structure
The exam breaks into three domains:
- People: 42% of the questions
- Process: 50% of the questions
- Business Environment: 8% of the questions
You'll need to understand how these domains connect. Process questions dominate, but people and business context matter just as much in real project work. That's why preparation that covers all three, not just the heaviest one, tends to stick.
Eligibility Requirements
To sit for the PMP exam, you need one of two paths:
- A four-year degree and 36 months of leading projects, or
- A high school diploma (or equivalent) and 60 months of leading projects
You must also complete 35 contact hours of formal project management education before applying. That's where most people start: finding a PMI-approved training provider. Our classes start at $399 and are led by PMI-approved trainers, so you'll cover those hours while learning from practitioners who've run real projects.
Why PMP Certification Matters
PMP certification is recognized globally. It signals to employers that you know how to lead and direct projects at scale. The salary bump is real: PMP-certified professionals earn 20% more on average than their non-certified peers. But beyond the paycheck, it opens doors to senior roles and larger programs that non-certified project managers often don't access.
With over 55,000 practitioners trained since 2001, we've seen firsthand how certification accelerates careers. The exam has a 61% pass rate, so it's not trivial. That's why preparation matters. Check out our post on how hard the PMP certification test actually is if you're weighing the effort.
