Will AI Replace Product Managers?

Product managers bring three things AI doesn't have:

• Judgment under uncertainty. When data conflicts or the path forward isn't obvious, your PM decides. AI can show you the options. It can't pick the one that's right for your business.
• Relationship navigation. Stakeholders, customers, engineers, designers. Your PM holds the space where those conversations happen and actually move something forward. That's not a task to automate.
• Strategic vision. Where does the product go in 18 months? What does the market actually need that it doesn't know yet? AI can help you see what is. Your PM imagines what could be.

Remove those, and you don't have product management. You have a reporting function.

What Your Product Managers Should Actually Do Now

If you're running a product team, this is the move: don't ask your PMs to learn AI tools as a side project. Give them time to get good at the tools your company's already using, then protect their calendar for the work that matters. Customer conversations. Stakeholder alignment. Strategic decisions. The stuff that takes thinking, not processing.

For your product managers themselves, the path is simpler than it sounds:

• Get hands-on with one AI tool relevant to your work. Not all of them. One. Use it for a sprint. See what it actually saves you.
• Double down on the skills AI can't touch: how you listen, how you ask the right question, how you build trust with your team.
• Stay curious about what's changing in your space, but don't chase every new tool. Your job is still to know your customers and make good calls.
