Is CSM better than CSD?
No. CSM and CSD target different roles. CSM ($349–$549) suits Scrum Masters; CSD ($1,200) suits developers. Choose based on your career path.

Is CSM better than CSD?
No. They're not competitors. CSM (Certified Scrum Master) and CSD (Certified Scrum Developer) target different career paths entirely.
CSM focuses on Scrum fundamentals and team leadership. You learn how to facilitate sprints, remove blockers, and coach teams through the Scrum framework. It costs $349 to $549 and includes a 2-day class plus exam.
CSD goes deeper into technical practices within Scrum. Developers use it to strengthen their craft: test-driven development, refactoring, continuous integration. It costs around $1,200 and demands more hands-on technical work.
When to Choose CSM
Pick CSM if you're moving into a Scrum Master role or want to lead teams. You don't need to be a developer. Many CSM graduates come from QA, product management, or operations backgrounds. The certification validates your knowledge of Scrum roles, events, and artifacts (the 3-5-3 rule covers this). If you're curious whether the investment pays off, check out our breakdown on whether a CSM certificate is worth it.
When to Choose CSD
Choose CSD if you're a developer who wants to improve your technical game inside a Scrum team. You'll learn practices that reduce bugs, speed up delivery, and make code easier to maintain. This path assumes you already code professionally.
The Real Question
Your role answers this. Are you managing or coaching teams? CSM. Are you writing code and want to level up your technical practices? CSD. Most teams need both: Scrum Masters who understand the framework, and developers who write better code faster.
