📖 Quick answer

Answered by Giora Morein, Certified Scrum Trainer. ThinkLouder has trained 55,000+ practitioners since 2001.

The PGMP certification is designed for program managers overseeing multiple projects, while the PMP certification targets project managers leading individual projects. PGMP is less common, with only about 1,200 certified professionals globally, compared to over 1 million PMP holders.

Key Differences

  • Focus: PGMP emphasizes program management, integrating multiple projects, while PMP focuses on managing single projects.
  • Experience Requirements: PGMP requires 48 months of project management experience and 48 months of program management experience, while PMP requires 36 months of project leadership experience for bachelor-degree holders.
  • Certification Body: Both certifications are awarded by PMI (Project Management Institute), but they serve different roles in project management.

Which Certification Should You Choose?

Choosing between PGMP and PMP depends on your career path. If you're managing multiple projects and want to demonstrate your ability to coordinate them effectively, PGMP is the way to go. If you're focused on leading projects and wish to validate your skills in that area, PMP is more suitable.

In my experience, many professionals start with PMP before moving to PGMP as their careers progress. It’s a logical step that allows you to build foundational skills first.
