PMP certification costs $405 to $555 in the US. PRINCE2 certification ranges from $300 to $1,500 depending on the level and provider. The real difference isn't just price—it's geography, methodology, and how your target employers actually hire.

Which Certification Wins in Your Region?

PMP is the standard in North America. If you're building a career in the US, Canada, or working for multinational companies headquartered there, PMP is what hiring managers expect on your resume. PRINCE2 dominates in Europe, the UK, Australia, and Commonwealth nations. If you're targeting those markets, PRINCE2 is the credential that opens doors.

That said, neither is wrong—they're just optimized for different labor markets. You can get PMP and work in London, but you'll be swimming upstream. Same with PRINCE2 in New York.

How They Actually Work

PMP is based on the PMBOK Guide and organizes project management into knowledge areas and process groups. It's prescriptive about what you need to know. You study ten knowledge areas, five process groups, and 49 processes. It's comprehensive and, frankly, a lot to memorize.

PRINCE2 is a structured method focused on organization and control. It's more about how projects should be governed and organized. It gives you a framework you can apply immediately. Two levels—Foundation and Practitioner—let you start smaller and build up.

If you want a single, comprehensive credential, PMP is your path. If you prefer a tiered approach where you can test the waters first, PRINCE2's two-level structure works better.

What About Scrum?

Here's the thing: if you're working in an agile environment, neither PMP nor PRINCE2 is the best fit. Both are rooted in waterfall or hybrid thinking. If your team is running Scrum, a Certified Scrum Master (CSM) credential makes more sense. We offer CSM training starting at $349, and over 55,000 practitioners have trained with us since 2001. It's a faster path—one day of training—and it's what your Scrum team will actually use.

If you're curious how CSM stacks up against PMP, we've got a comparison that walks through that choice.

Making Your Decision

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Where do you want to work? North America = PMP. Europe, UK, Australia = PRINCE2.
  2. Is your team agile or waterfall? Agile = CSM or CSPO. Waterfall or hybrid = PMP or PRINCE2.
  3. Do you want one big credential or a tiered path? One credential = PMP. Tiered = PRINCE2.

Your career goals and your region's hiring practices should drive this decision, not the price difference. Both certifications are legitimate and well-respected in their markets.
