To become a Scrum Master, you need to complete a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) course, pass the exam, and maintain your certification through ongoing education. The CSM course runs two days and costs $349 to $549. That's it. The path is straightforward.
Steps to Certification
Here's what you actually do:
- Complete a 2-day CSM training course.
- Pass the CSM exam, which has a 90% first-attempt pass rate.
- Obtain your Scrum Alliance membership, valid for two years.
- Earn 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) every two years to maintain your certification.
The exam itself isn't the hard part. Most people pass on the first try. What matters is finding a trainer who teaches you how to actually run a Scrum team, not just memorize definitions.
Choosing a Training Provider
Not all CSM courses are created equal. A good trainer brings real experience. ThinkLouder has trained over 55,000 practitioners since 2001, and our courses are led by Certified Scrum Trainers (CSTs) with hands-on experience running teams. You'll spend two days in a room with someone who's actually done this work.
When you pick a provider, ask: Do they teach from case studies? Can they answer questions about what happens when your team is distributed across time zones? Do they know what to do when a stakeholder interrupts mid-sprint?
What Comes After CSM
Once you're certified, you have options. Some Scrum Masters move into the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) track to deepen facilitation skills. Others pursue the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) to understand the product side better. Your next step depends on where you want to go.
