CSPO certification is awarded by Scrum Alliance upon completing a 2-day course focused on the Product Owner role in Scrum. There's no exam. You earn the credential through full attendance and instructor sign-off.

Unlike some certifications that require passing a test, CSPO hinges on showing up, participating, and demonstrating you've engaged with the material. That's it.

How CSPO certification works

The path is straightforward. You attend a 2-day course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). During those two days, you work through interactive exercises, case studies, and real-world scenarios that Product Owners actually face. Your instructor watches for engagement and understanding. If you're there, you're paying attention, and you're doing the work, you get certified.

Scrum Alliance then issues your credential valid for two years. You'll also get access to member resources and can list the certification on LinkedIn and your resume.

What you'll learn as a Product Owner

The course covers the fundamentals of product ownership in Scrum. You'll learn how to build and prioritize a product backlog, work with development teams, and make decisions that move the product forward. Most Product Owners come in thinking the role is about saying "yes" or "no" to features. The course reframes it: you're responsible for maximizing value and managing stakeholder expectations.

You'll also see how Product Owners fit into the broader Scrum framework. If you're new to Scrum entirely, the course assumes basic familiarity but doesn't require it. We've trained Product Owners with 20 years of experience and people switching careers. Both walk out with the same credential.

Course requirements and timeline

To earn CSPO certification, you need to:

  • Attend a full 2-day course from a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST)
  • Participate in interactive learning and practical exercises
  • Receive instructor approval upon completion

That's the requirement. No pre-work, no exam, no follow-up assignments. Two days, then you're done.

ThinkLouder offers CSPO courses starting at $349. We've trained over 55,000 practitioners since 2001, and our instructors bring real Product Owner experience into the classroom. Check our certifications page for upcoming dates.
