ITIL certification isn't a Scrum credential. It's an IT service management framework used by infrastructure teams, operations managers, and IT leaders to structure how they deliver services. But if you're considering it, you need to know the real cost before you commit.
The price tag depends on three things: which level you're pursuing, who trains you, and whether you're paying for exam retakes. Most people underestimate the total spend.
What each ITIL level costs
ITIL has five levels, and they stack. You can't jump to Expert without passing Intermediate first.
Foundation runs $300–$600. This is the entry point. You're learning the framework basics: service design, service transition, service operation. Most people pass it in one shot. Exam alone is $150–$250 depending on your region and testing provider.
Practitioner sits at $400–$800. It goes deeper into specific practices like incident management or change enablement. You pick one module. Fewer people take this route; most skip straight to Intermediate.
Intermediate is where costs jump. Expect $1,000–$1,500 for training plus $200–$400 per exam. You're choosing from four pathways: Service Lifecycle, Service Capability, or a combination. Some people take multiple modules, which multiplies the cost.
Expert and Master are rare and expensive. Expert requires passing all Intermediate modules (so you're looking at $3,000–$5,000 total across modules) plus a capstone project. Master is invitation-only and involves real-world service management work.
Most career-changers stop at Intermediate. It's the credential that moves the needle on your resume.
Training provider pricing varies more than you'd think
The same ITIL Foundation exam can cost $200 with one provider and $350 with another. Why? Accreditation, included study materials, instructor experience, and delivery format.
A budget online course might give you slides and a practice test. A premium provider includes instructor-led workshops, hands-on scenarios, access to a learning platform for 12 months, and a money-back guarantee if you don't pass. That premium version costs 2–3x more upfront but saves you money if you avoid retakes.
Accreditation matters here. ITIL is managed by AXELOS (now part of Peoplecert). Look for providers accredited by Peoplecert to deliver official courses. Non-accredited providers are cheaper but their training won't count toward your official credential record.
When you're evaluating any professional certification provider, accreditation and instructor credentials should be your first filter, not price. ThinkLouder's team includes Certified Scrum Trainers (CSTs) with 25+ years of combined experience training agile practitioners. That same rigor applies whether you're pursuing Scrum certifications or evaluating ITIL programs elsewhere.
Hidden costs that surprise people
You pass the Foundation exam on your first try. Good. But if you don't, retakes cost $150–$250 each. Some providers charge rescheduling fees if you need to move your exam date. A few charge for exam voucher replacements if you lose yours.
Study materials add up. Official ITIL publications run $50–$150 each. Practice exam banks cost $30–$80. A comprehensive study kit from a premium provider might include all of it; a budget option makes you buy separately.
Time is a cost too, though it's not on the invoice. Foundation takes 20–30 hours to study. Intermediate takes 40–60 hours. If you're doing this alongside a full-time job, that's real.
Renewal is another line item. ITIL certifications don't expire, but AXELOS changed this in 2023. Foundation and Practitioner are now permanent. Intermediate requires renewal every three years (around $300–$500). Expert requires annual renewal. If you're planning a long career in IT operations, factor that in.
How to evaluate total cost of ownership
Don't just compare the course price. Ask these questions:
- What's included? Study materials, practice exams, instructor access, retake guarantee?
- Is the provider accredited by Peoplecert? If not, you're wasting time.
- What's the pass rate? If 40% of students pass on the first attempt and 60% pass on retakes, you're looking at an average cost per certification that's higher than the sticker price.
- Do you get lifetime access to materials, or does it expire after 90 days?
- What does renewal cost, and when does it kick in?
A $400 course from a budget provider plus a $250 retake exam plus $80 in study materials you had to buy separately adds up to $730. A $600 all-in premium course with a 95% first-pass rate and lifetime access might save you money over time.
If you're in a role where IT service management matters (IT director, operations manager, infrastructure lead), the credential pays for itself in credibility. If you're a Scrum Master curious about IT ops, it's probably not worth the time. Your energy is better spent on CSPO certification or an Advanced CSM if your role is product or delivery focused.
Regional and employer variations
Exam prices vary by country. Foundation in India runs $100–$150. In the US or UK, it's $200–$250. Training providers price regionally too; a course in Southeast Asia costs less than the same course in North America.
Some employers cover certification costs. If yours does, clarify whether they cover exam retakes and renewal fees too. Some reimburse only the passing attempt. Others cap reimbursement at $500 total.
Is it worth it?
ITIL Foundation is worth the $300–$600 if you work in IT operations, infrastructure, or service delivery. It's a baseline credential, like CSM is for Scrum Masters. Intermediate is worth it if you're moving into a specialist role like incident manager or change manager.
If you're a Product Owner or Scrum Master on a software delivery team, ITIL is probably not your priority. A CSPO or Advanced Scrum Master (A-CSM) credential will move your career faster.
Budget $500–$1,500 for Foundation through Intermediate, including study materials and one potential retake. If you're pursuing Expert, add $3,000–$4,000. Plan for renewal costs if you're staying in the field long-term.
